Professionals Complimentary to Dentistry In the United States and most European countries, many stages of orthodontic treatment are carried out by specially trained team members - or Professionals Complimentary to Dentistry (PCDs) - under the supervision of Orthodontists. This teamwork approach means that PCDs can become highly expert in certain parts of the orthodontic procedure, and patients meet several specifically trained team members as their treatment progresses. Treatment generally proceeds more efficiently and effectively in this manner too. One example of a PCD in this country is the hygienist who has become an expert in helping patients control dental plaque and the damage it does to healthy teeth and gums, and in treating periodontal (gum) conditions. We are hopeful, that as the government allows us to train and employ more PCDs that the teamwork approach will become the norm within Bristol Orthodontics.
