As part of some orthodontic treatments, it is necessary to carry out surgical procedures. These can be as simple as removing teeth to make space, but sometimes these teeth are impacted and need to be either surgically removed or exposed (uncovered) prior to orthodontic treatment. Increasingly these days, surgical procedures are also used to replace missing teeth via the insertion of metal implants into the bone. Most routine dental extractions are carried out by a patient's general dentist but some of the other procedures require specialist skills. When these are required and the patient is happy to be treated while still conscious, we offer now offer these treatments within our practices. If however, a patient prefers to have treatment under general anaesthesia, this is more appropriately carried out in hospital when there are proper recovery and emergency facilities available.
