1. The impressions that the
orthodontist took of your teeth are made into plaster models on which
the appliance is made.
The model technician pours plaster into the moulds and, once set,
the models are trimmed ready for the dental technician to make
the brace. |
 |
2. Here the patient's teeth
have been cast as a plaster model and set ready on a vacuum-forming
machine.
A sheet of special plastic is fixed above the model and heated
until extremely flexible. |
 |
3. A vacuum is then started
below the model as the plastic is brought down.
The vacuum ensures the plastic forms perfectly around the teeth,
making an accurate copy. |
 |
4. The plastic copy is then
separated from the sheet using a special cutter.
The appliance is trimmed so that it covers all the teeth in
the mouth. |

|
5. Once removed from the
sheet, the plaster model is detached.
All the cut edges need smoothing with a rubber point. |

|
6. These edges are then polished
until smooth using a Lisco TM disc.
Without this the appliance could be uncomfortable. |

|
7. The protective film on
the plastic is removed revealing the appliance. |

|
8. The appliance is finished
and ready to give to the patient.
All appliances are thoroughly cleaned and sterilised before
being returned for fitting. |
