Separators

These are small rubber bands that fit between your back teeth. They are usually left in place for one or two weeks, and they start to open a tiny gap between your back teeth so that we can make space to fit your appliance next visit.

  • They should not hurt, although you may find your teeth develop a slight dull ache for the first few days.  If this happens, take your usual pain relief tablets - e.g. what you might take for a headache.
  • Do continue to brush your teeth as normal, especially around the separators.
  • Do avoid sticky chewy foods such as chewing gum or toffees.
  • If the separators fall out within 2-3 days of your next appointment, don't worry about it - it just means that the spaces between your teeth have opened and they will not close again that quickly. If they fall out sooner than that this though, it may be worth having them replaced.
