Twin Block Functional Appliance

Your twin block functional appliance will have been made specially to fit your mouth, and you must take great care of it. This brace will feel large and bulky in your mouth at first and it may feel awkward to close your mouth until you are used to biting in a forward position. You may also find your mouth produces more saliva (water) for a time but this will reduce as you become used to wearing the brace. Try to get used to the brace by building up the hours of wear gradually during your first week.

If you have any problems, please contact us as soon as possible.

After the first week you must:

  • Wear your brace all the time, even at night.
  • Try to also eat with your brace in if possible. If you really can't manage this though, you can take it out at mealtimes but do remember to put it back in afterwards.
  • Clean your teeth and your brace after every time you eat and before bed using your toothbrush.
  • You should carry your toothbrush to school, and when out of the house when you might eat something.
  • Use a fluoride mouthwash daily.
  • Try to avoid snacking.
  • Do not eat sticky foods or sweets, as these will damage your brace.
  • Remove your brace when playing any contact sports or swimming.
  • Keep your brace in a safe place as there may be a charge for replace a lost or broken brace.
