Fixed appliances

Success of fixed appliance treatment depends on how you look after your mouth and brace.

Your teeth will be tender when your brace is put on, and to a lesser degree after the first few visits.  This will last a couple of days, but will soon pass.   If you need them, during the first day or so, do take your normal pain relief tablets - i.e. what you would take for a headache.

If you have any problems, please contact us as soon as possible.

You must:

  • Keep your brace very clean using the brushes recommended and toothpaste.
  • Try to clean your teeth and your brace after every time you eat and before bed using your toothbrush.
  • You should carry your toothbrush to school or work and when out of the house when you might eat something.
  • Use fluoride mouthwash once a day - this helps to protect your teeth.
  • Try to avoid snacking.
  • Do not eat sticky foods or sweets, or have fizzy drinks of any kind, as these will damage your brace, and leave you in danger of decay (holes) around the brace
  • Avoid chewing anything hard (nuts, crusty bread, whole apples, pencils!) as such things can break your brace. Ideally, cut food up into small pieces.
  • Your brace is designed to come off at the end of treatment so try to be careful with it as rough treatment can break it.  Breaking your brace prolongs the treatment time as it slows down the progress. It also means the added inconvenience of you having to return to see us to have the brace repaired.
